Sarah Hickey’s series of idols and still life vignettes are expressions of an internal world of dreaming and reflection. The complex layering of imagery and patterns depict beauty, spiritual iconography, and the divine feminine/masculine. Her most recent collection, Portals, explores themes of transition, liminality, and transformation, with works that incorporate the symbolism of thresholds and sacred passage. Her art delves into memory, identity, and spirituality through an interplay of imagery that is both personal and universal.
A Griffith University Queensland College of Art graduate, Sarah holds bachelor’s degrees in fine arts and education. She has participated in ten solo exhibitions and over thirty group shows. Last year, she was a finalist in The Percival Portrait and Sunshine Coast National Art Prize. Recently, her portraiture work was a semi-finalist in The Doug Moran Portrait Prize and The Lester Art Prize. Other finalist art prizes include The Brisbane Portrait Prize, The Kennedy Art Prize, Redland Art Awards, Clayton Utz Art Award, Marie Ellis OAM Drawing Prize, The Mandorla Art Award, Kenilworth Painting Prize, Lethbridge 10000 Art Award, and SBS Portrait Prize.
